Here are 9 causes of smelly urine. Did you ever sit in the bathroom to calm down and think, Yuck, what's that smell? Maybe you assumed that the stench was the weak but nasty smell that sharpens in the office bathrooms... but then you realized it wasn't at all. It was actually your own urine. Yes, urine can be smelly, for several reasons. Many of them are harmless, but in some cases, odorous urine can be a sign that something more serious is happening. We ask a doctor to explain what the olympic urine causes and what it can do about it. Hint: The five cups of coffee you took this morning don't do you any favors. CONCERNED: Dehydration Not drinking enough H2O is the main cause of Olympic urine, Sonia Dutta, MD, urogynecologist at NorthShore University HealthSystem in Illinois, says Health. Urine is a combination of water and waste products, explains Dr. Dutta. "So when you're dehydrated, your urine has less water in relation to waste products, which can make you smell urine," he says. You can check the color of your urine to confirm if it is dehydrated. If it is amber- or honey-colored, or even a dark orange, you probably need to raise your water consumption. But if it is a pale straw or transparent yellow color, you are well hydrated, which means that your urine could be smelled for another reason. Eating certain foods The asparagus is notorious to make the urine smell. But if this vegetarian doesn't give you a funny smell, that's also normal. Dr. Dutta says that everyone digests food differently, and some can go out with asparagus without any change in their urine. "It's very likely because your body doesn't have the enzyme they need to completely decompose it," he explains. But others have the enzyme, and when those people digest asparagus, "their bodies do something called sulfur metabolite, which can make the urine smell sulfur or ammonia. "Other foods, such as onions, garlic, curry, salmon and alcohol, can have a similar effect. Dr. Dutta suggests drinking plenty of water by eating foods you know how to piss; it will dilute your urine so that the stench is not so perceptible. Drinking coffee I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your coffee habit might be making your pis suck. The metabolites of coffee, or the by-products that come from coffee when broken into your body, can smell urine, says Dr. Dutta. (As we have said before, this is not the case for all. So if you've never noticed a smell after your morning joe cup, you're probably in the clear.) Coffee is also a diuretic, which means you have to urinate a lot, spreading your extra and sodium fluid body. Diuretics can cause dehydration, so at the top of the smell of those coffee metabolites, your pis can also have a stench because it is more concentrated than usual. Professional tip: Drink a high glass of water before your morning beer gets rid of. CONCERNED: urinary tract infection A (UTI) occurs when bacteria enter your urinary system through the urethra and then begin to multiply in the bladder. Bacteria, of course, can make your pis smell bad. But Dr. Dutta says that if you have a UTI, you will probably have more symptoms than odorous urine. The same bacteria can also make you have to go more frequently, give you a burning sensation when urinating, and even turn the urine cloudy or even bloody. yeast infection Yeasts are microorganisms that live naturally in various parts of the body, including the vagina. But when yeast grows out of control, they can trigger an infection. Least infections occur in the vagina, but because the urethra is so close to the vaginal opening, your urine can pick up a smell of the neighboring infection, says Dr. Dutta. Like a UTI, it usually comes with, like itching, redness, swelling of the vagina and vulva, and thick white discharge. B Sexually transmitted infection "Some sexually transmitted infections can cause uretritis or inflammation of the urethra," says Dr. Dutta. "Everything that causes inflammation or irritation can potentially be associated with bacteria or pus or bleeding, which can change the smell of urine." Chlamydia, tricomoniasis and gonorrhea are STIs that most commonly cause uretritis. But even if an STI doesn't cause uretritis, the urine could still pick up an irritation smell in the vagina, it adds. You think you could have a CTI? Talk to your doctor as soon as possible. They will help you determine the best option for treatment. CONCERNED: Kidney stones Anyone who has had a kidney stone knows how painful it may be. Kidney stones develop when salt and other minerals found in the urine are joined and formed in hard deposits similar to stone. They can be as small as the grains of sand or as large as the gravel pieces. "Kenney's stones can collect bacteria and cause infection or sometimes bleeding," says Dr. Dutta. "That can change what the urine smells. "Other symptoms of kidney stones include back pain, side or groin; nausea or vomiting; frequent urination; blood in urine; pain with urine; and fever. "Kenney's stones will never be a smelly urine," he adds. "There will also be other symptoms." Stones usually pass in the urine without treatment. But get medical care if you have intense pain, vomiting, bleeding, or signs of infection. Diabetes People who have undiagnosed diabetes are "extracting sugar in their urine," says Dr. Dutta. That's because they can't process sugar the way most people can, which means they have excess glucose in the blood, that the body tries to get rid of through the urine. "When you have that extra sugar in your urine, it will give you a sweet and fruity smell," he explains. People with uncontrolled diabetes will probably also have greater urgency or urine frequency, as sugar irritates the bladder. Talk to your doctor as soon as possible if you think you may have diabetes. Vitamins Dr. Dutta says that many people notice that their urine smells different after taking vitamins, in the same way some people detect a different urine smell after eating certain foods. But there's nothing to worry about if you conclude that a vitamin is making your urine range. "Vitamins tend to be a little beyond what your body really needs, so you will often end up peeing some of that," he says.
